WAC Graduate Administrative Associate

25% Spring 2005;
25-50% Summer 2005-Spring 2006.

The Ohio State University's ADA Coordinator's Office and the Web Accessibility Center (WAC) are seeking a Graduate Assistant for the 2005-2006 academic year beginning Spring Quarter. The position will average 10-20 hours per week (with appropriate stipend, tuition & fees) and will provide training in accessible web design. Candidates should have experience in web design and maintenance, good communications skills, and be willing to take initiative. Interested individuals are encouraged to explore the WAC web site to learn more about the web accessibility initiatives the successful candidate will be a part of.

Duties & Qualifications

Job Duties:

  • Plan, schedule, and conduct training workshops and develop supporting material (e.g., fact sheets, tutorials) on web accessibility: currently covering -- accessible forms, pdf, tables and layout, css, Dreamweaver and FrontPage. See: Archive of Past Workshops.
  • Assess web pages and provide feedback on accessibility and usability.
  • Advise and work in partnership with other university organizations and technology units to develop and enforce comprehensive and consistent accessibility guidelines throughout campus.
  • Web page construction and maintenance for ADA Coordinator's Office and the Web Accessibility Center sites.
  • Manage center budget: advise on hardware and software purchases, oversee student employees, and order and maintain office supplies.
  • Keep up-to-date with advances in technology in education (Distance Learning, technology-enhanced distribution and assessment, developing assistive technology) and publish reports on impact and effectiveness related to accessibility and usability issues. [Attendance at conferences in related research areas encouraged and supported.]
  • Help others maintain and support digital content.
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum qualifications:

Extensive knowledge of HTML and CSS, web page design and creation, excellent communication (written and presentation) skills, ability to work independently.

Desirable qualifications:

Knowledge of accessibility guidelines; familiarity with Flash, Fireworks and/or Photoshop, XML,PDF, Dreamweaver and FrontPage. Competence in one or more scripting language: ColdFusion, PHP, and/or Javascript.

Please note: This position involves a significant amount of teaching and training for individuals and small groups, and in formal development workshops offered to all areas of the university. Teaching experience and ability to communicate with all levels of technology users -- beginner to advanced -- will be given greater consideration than advanced technical knowledge/experience.

Salary: Tuition plus stipend

Web Accessibility Center Staff

The Ohio State University 's Web Accessibility Center (WAC) is seeking qualified and motivated student employees to work in the center and support the creation of accessible web-enabled technology. The WAC has an immediate opening for a 20 hour per week (flexible) staff position. This position will support the WAC Graduate Administrative Associate in:

  • Basic web page construction and maintenance for WAC;
  • Developing support material (e.g., fact sheets, tutorials, videos, workshops) on web accessibility;
  • Organizing and hosting workshops on web accessibility;
  • Assessing web pages and providing feedback on accessibility and usability;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum qualifications:   Extensive knowledge of HTML, web page design and creation, good communication skills, ability to work independently, and manage time effectively. Knowledge of or willingness to learn accessibility guidelines and standards.

Desirable qualifications :  Knowledge of accessibility validator software (Bobby, WAVE, etc.); familiarity with style sheets, XHTML, PDF, Dreamweaver and FrontPage.

Salary: $7-9 per hour, depending on experience.
