How NOT to Identify PDF Links: Best -- LINKS LIST

Since each link is uniquely identified, the LINKS LIST now becomes a convenient way to quickly scroll to the file we need.

One more possible improvement: if the designer had made the link to Adobe Reader only once at either the top or bottom of the page, there would be no repeated link text on the page and no repeated entries in our LINKS LIST. However, this is a minor issue, compared to our much worse examples shown earlier in this presentation.

Remember, good links:

  1. Have unique, descriptive text that can be understood "out of context" of the rest of the page.

  2. Clearly identify the type of file being linked, especially when that file will require additional software or plug-in beyond the basic browser (e.g. Flash movies, Word documents, PDF files, and etc.).
